Rémy Ballot namend new Chief Conductor

The Altomonte Festival Orchestra St. Florian has appointed young French conductor Rémy Ballot as its new Chief Conductor.

A graduate of the Paris Conservatoire, Ballot is one of the very last protégés of the legendary conductor Sergiu Celibidache, with whom he studied regularly.   His ongoing Bruckner cycle for the Austrian label Gramola, which features both the Altomonte Orchestra and the Oberösterreichisches Jugendsinfonieorchester, has garnered glowing critical praise and several awards, including the Diapason d’or découverte and the Pizzicato Supersonic Award.  Reviewing Ballot’s recent CD of Bruckner 9 with the Altomonte – recorded from a single performance at the Brucknertage St. Florian –  the Wiener Zeitung wrote:

“Rémy Ballot’s interpretation of Bruckner’s 9th Symphony is a must-have, more than any other since the years of Celibidache.  The Ballot equation is: accuracy + energy = ecstasy squared … The Altomonte Orchestra surpass themselves, evidently aware that they are taking part in something extraordinary.  This recording sets a new standard.”
